So, if you’re like me you’re probably already thinking about what to wear on your travels and what to pack. Whats comfortable, light and fashionable? Whats matches your individual style? What will be culturally appropriate? And the main issue of all…how am I going to carry it all in a single backpack? I know, impossible right?
Through doing lots of research we decided on the amounts of clothes and accessories we can carry in our backpacks. We also got our friend (who currently lives in China) to do a trial run in her 40L backpack. We found that for us a 50-55L backpack would be big enough to carry the minimal amount of clothing whilst not being too heavy.
Three points to remember,
- Choose clothing that is light in weight.
- Choose clothing that can be layered.
- Do not over pack.
Now, we know we haven’t actually left yet therefore our opinion may (and probably will) change once we start our journey backpacking around Southeast Asia. We thought it might be interesting to document our packing list before we leave and then follow up with any changes we may have in a year! Our packing list is inspired by a few bloggers we follow religiously!

What will we pack?
Personally, I like lists (you may have already noticed) so here is my clothing list:
- 7 Pairs of underwear
- 5 Pairs of socks
- 2 Bras (a nice one and a sports bra)
- 2 Swimming costumes/bikinis
- 1 Dress/kaftan (for the beach)
- 1 Dress for evening wear
- 2 Pajama sets (one with shorts and one with trousers)
- 5 Tops (4 short sleeved and 1 long sleeved)
- 1 Thin sweater
- 1 Jumper
- 3 Pairs of thin shorts (not denim)
- 1 Pair of thin trousers/hippy pants (linen or thin material)
- 1 Pair of black leggings
- 1 Rain jacket
- 1 Cardigan
- 1 Pair of flip flops
- 1 Pair of comfortable shoes/ Trainers
- 1 Pair of sandles/dress shoes
And that’s all. That is everything. For a trip that will take over a year! I know it doesn’t seem a lot but we will be washing our clothes often… maybe! But seriously, buy cheap clothes to take with you, when they are worn out you can donate them or throw them away and buy some more. There are cheap clothing stores everywhere. So don’t panic. This list obviously doesn’t include items such as gadgets, medicines, toiletries and electronics. Once our backpacks are packed, we will do a post on what is inside our backpack which will feature everything!
If you have any points about my suggestions or any suggestions of your own then please comment and let us know! Keep your eyes peeled for my next blog post about what clothes I will be taking with me travelling and my individual style.
